About Bilbao (BIO) Airport

Bilbao (BIO) Airport is an international airport situated at a distance of 9 km (5.6 mi) away from Bilbao, in the Basque Country, Spain. A hub for Vueling and for the Northern Spain, the airport handled 4,172,903 passengers in 2008. It facilitates the connection with several international cities, but also with the Canary Islands.

Built in 1928, nowadays it has a pretty new terminal, designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. Due to the shape of symmetrical wings, it is nicknamed “La Paloma”, i.e. The Dove. The upper floor is handling the departures, while the lower one is for arrivals. The design chosen by the Spanish architect is criticized by some, who complain about the fact that it is difficult to enlarge the capacity of the terminal, the design being too close. However, expansion plans began in 2008, aiming at increasing the terminal capacity up to 8 million passengers per year. The deadline is 2014 and the works will cost Aena, the operator, 114 million euros.
